Are you in a rut?

Less than two months in the year and personal reflection is right up in my face screaming at me, “What are you going to do better next year?”

I have wanted to read more for a while now. It’s one of my personal development goals and let me tell you, not getting this goal checked off my list has been eating at me. I can balance … 100 different professional spinning plates, 6 professional/personal Google calendars, 4 social media accounts on 3 different platforms, 2 athletic schedules for my children, start an NFP, and a partridge in a pear tree. I can do all that, but somehow I just can’t get this reading thing checked off my list. Slowing down long enough to read a book… ‘aint nobody got time for that!

NO Dawn you just aren’t making it a priority but hey, same-same no?

que ….AUDIBLE!

Somehow, my mindset was stuck on it HAD to be eye to book, I never even fathomed ear to book. Same-same right? I fully know that every page-turning avid reader just jumped out of their seat and screamed NOT THE SAME THING DAWN! I 100% agree with you. When I have the time, or should I say, MAKE the time to hold a new book, very few things beat the feeling of running the tips of your fingers over the soft clean paper of a new book.
I know I capture information better when I read it or watch a training session live, so somehow I discounted listening to books. Somehow I didn’t give myself credit for personal development if I was ‘reading’ on Audible. I have audible credits piling up like newborn laundry, and yet there were so many books I wanted to read.
Last week I pre-ordered a memoir audiobook from a famous actor. When the delivery notification came through this week, I downloaded the book, and started to listen, I IMMEDIATELY realized the author spoke too slowly for my liking. “Get there faster!” screamed my superhighway brain. I changed the speed to 1.2 and in less than 24 hours I finished the book. What just happened? The subject matter was an autobiographical/memoir so all I had to do was listen, don’t worry about applying life lessons, but still … one book DONE! With headphones in, I got ready for a client meeting, I ran errands in my car, I cleaned the house, all the while I ‘read’ a book!

Here’s what insight just T-boned me!

Instead of having a book on my shelf judging me for not reading it, or being sad because I’m not playing with it, (*que Toy Story music), I found a way to get my personal development in. I used an untraditional method to accomplish my goal. Check that one off the list!

So now I ask…

The problem you have that just keeps showing up or you just can’t seem to find a way through… have you tried an ‘untraditional’ way to solve it yet? Ok maybe it doesn’t have to be untraditional, but have you;

  • Asked a colleague for their perspective?

  • Sought an industry expert perspective?

  • Connected with someone outside your industry who has similar challenges as you?

  • Connected with your local Chamber of Commerce? If yours is as amazing as ours is in Leduc, they will know someone who can help you.

  • Connected with our NLC team to brainstorm or bounce ideas off of? (Just saying)

I often find that business owners get in a rut, stuck in a mental track they can’t get out of because the rut is so worn down and patterns of thinking are just too hard to climb or maneuver out of. THIS is the exact moment a new perspective can help you find your way out! Old problems are not solved with old ways of thinking. As an owner, it is your responsibility to seek new perspectives and maybe even untraditional ways of solving problems. NLC can help you avoid the ruts or get out of whatever rut you are in so you can get to your NEXT LEVEL!
